The registration process for Portal is a four step process.
i) SmartNote: Registration lets you use the Portal in new ways. It is not “simple” because 2-factor solutions are more secure than those systems that only use 1-factor. It is similar to using a bank card and a PIN number at an ATM. The security is for your protection and for others. It helps you to know who you are chatting with.
Registration Steps
- Request to be registered for Portal.
- Install the WEDnet™ CA certificate.
- Wait for approval.
- Install your personal digital certificate and complete registration.
Description of the Registration Process
j) SmartNote: You only have to register once and there are step-by-step instructions provided here, and on-line movies to watch! If you have an issue during registration, you can submit a Comments/Question form and a Portal Manager will get back to you.
We have prepared tutorial movies that show you activities required for each of the registration steps. They are available as Flash movies to be viewed online, or as files that can be downloaded to your computer. The links to these files can be found in the paragraphs describing each step.
You will require the Adobe Flash Player to view the online Flash movies.
The downloadable movies run on Microsoft Windows, and are executable (.exe) files. In order to play the movies, you will need to first save the tutorial file, and then execute the file. Just double-click on the file to launch (execute) it. The files are also provided in an alternative download format at the bottom of this document.
Step 1 - Request to be registered for Portal.
The first part of the registration process is to request registration for the Portal. This step involves you providing some basic information in order to create a registration record for you on the Portal Identity Management System (IDMS). This record will contain enough information to identify you as a unique individual. It will also ask you to create your "Shared Secret", a password that will be used during the later steps of the process. At the same time, a request to grant you access to the Portal will be created.

Step 2 - Install the WEDnet™ Certificate Authority certificate.
After you have submitted a request to be registered into Portal, you will receive an email confirming your request. In this email will be instructions and a link to install the WEDnet™ Certificate Authority (CA) certificate. The Portal uses digital certificates to increase the security of the Portal, and the WEDnet™ Certificate Authority is the system that issues those certificates.

You may also download the movie: s2-installing-wednet-ca.exe (1.2 MB, Right-click on this link and use "Save Target As..." or "Save Link As...").
Step 3 - Wait for approval.
k) SmartNote: Your approval will not be immediate and you will be contacted to confirm your identity. An email will arrive with further instructions.
After you have submitted a request to be registered for Portal, the IDMS Agent for the organization you chose will be contacted to approve your request. They will examine your request, and will then authorize you to become a Registered User on Portal, if the information you provided meets the requirements for registration.
Once your application has been approved, you will be sent an e-mail informing you that your application has been approved. The e-mail will also instruct you to proceed to Step 4.
Step 4 - Install your Portal certificate and complete registration.
l) SmartNote: Please go through each step. Please click “next” to advance each step. You are creating your on-line identity by registering.
The Portal uses what is called a "two-factor" authentication system, unlike most web sites, which require "single-factor" authentication, typically a username and password. The Portal, in order to achieve a higher level of security requires both a password (factor 1) and digital certificates (factor 2) in order to authenticate a user.
You have already created a password in Step 1 when you created your "Shared Secret". Step 4 will help you to create and install your personal certificate for Portal. You will then be able to use your "Shared Secret" and certificate to authenticate with Portal.
Once you have installed your certificate, you need to complete your registration. You will be asked for some information that can be used to authenticate you to the registration system if you need to change any of your options (such as your password). After you have provided this information, your registration is processed and you will be able to log into the Portal.
